Carpenter-Ridgeway Neighborhood Association

Carpenter- Ridgeway

The Carpenter-Ridgeway neighborhood is located west of Fair Oaks Ave./Wright St.  between Anderson and Packers Ave. It includes the Bridges Golf Course. The neighborhood's roots stretch back to 1876 when John Quincy Brigham and Mary Carpenter-Brigham purchased farms that now include the Fair Oaks and Ridgeway Neighborhoods. The farms grew corn, barley, hay and tobacco. The original Brigham home was built in 1853, and previously served as the Grover Inn, a stagecoach stop for people traveling from Green Bay through Southwestern Wisconsin.

The neighborhood was platted in 1924. Previously, in 1913, the creek was dredged and named Starkweather Creek. Additional platting took place before and after WWII. In 1956 the neighborhood was officially annexed to the City of Madison.

The neighborhood association was established in 1996 to improve the appearance of E. Washington Ave, improve and preserve natural areas, and develop shopping nodes to encourage pedestrian traffic and decrease automobile traffic. Since its inception the association has had a number of successes including the construction of a park and walking trails, plainting of trees, completion of a creek restoration project and completion of a number of development and buidling projects.
