Hiestand
The Hiestand neighborhood is located in a triangular area between Hwy 30, Milwaukee St. and Stoughton Rd. Hiestand neighborhood includes over 300 single family residences, two large apartment complexes, condominiums, numerous multi-family units, senior housing, two parks and over 30 different businesses. The neighborhood takes its name from Hiestand Park and School, which are named after Jacob Hiestand, a tobacco farmer who owned a farm directly across from the park and school. In 1855 Hiestand School was built and served families from the towns of Blooming Grove and Burke. The original frame schoolhouse was razed in 1915 to make way for a new stucco-covered structure. The new school was considered modern for its time, boasting central heat, running water and indoor plumbing. Hiestand Park still remains on its original location and currently features a disc golf course and sledding hill.
