North Lake Mendota Neighborhood Association

The North Lake Mendota neighborhood is enclosed by Cherokee Marsh on the north, Northport Dr. and Central Wisconsin Center on the east, Mendota Mental Health Institute on the south, and Lake Mendota on the west. The neighborhood association formed in 1978 in an effort to protect the wetlands west of Mendota Health Center. The health center originally opened in 1860 and was called an asylum to house and care for the mentally ill. It was the first mental hospital to open in Wisconsin. Later, its name was changed to Mendota State Hospital. Today it is called the Mendota Mental Health Institute, and it houses those in need of specialized treatment as well as conducts research and education.

The North Lake Mendota Neighborhood Association hosts a number of annual events, including a back to school drive and picnic, a Halloween children's parade, Holiday potluck, Easter Egg Hunt, spring picnic, and annual garage sale.
